After
the closing of St. Josaphat Elementary and High Schools (1960),
the records were transferred to the Archdiocese
of Detroit. In addition, there are two journals
in the parish archives that list the names of all students
enrolled in grades 1-12, along with their father’s name
and their street addresses. One journal was for the school
years of 1942-43 through 1951-52 and a second one for the
school years 1952-53 through 1959-60.
These
records could prove to be invaluable to genealogists. If you
are interested in your family's genealogy, you should first
check out the records on microfilm as they will be your best
resource. These older records have a great deal of information
in them. Also, if you know your family members were parishioners
at St. Josaphat, you might consider posting what information
you have about them on the Polish
Genealogical Society of Michigan website. There is a message
board there that is specifically for genealogy-related
questions about Detroit Area Churches. That would be a good
place to ask any questions you might have about the history
of the parish or school or records pertaining to the parish
or school.
If
you think your family were members of St. Josaphat Church
but you can't find them in any of the parish records, consider
looking at records for Sweetest
Heart of Mary Church or St.
Albertus Church. These other two parishes were also ethnic
Polish parishes and the churches are in easy walking distance
of each other.
